Bringing Telehealth to Bakel and Ndouloumadji: A New Chapter in Rural Healthcare
MLIV at work in the community.
Hundreds of miles from Dakar, in the remote regions of Bakel and Ndouloumadji, healthcare access has long been a challenge for local communities. Many residents have never seen a doctor in their lifetime, and long travel distances make even the most basic care inaccessible. At aloMedic, we believe that geography should never determine the quality of care one receives, and this belief guided our recent community health event in partnership with FDSUT.
A Partnership for Impact
FDSUT, the government entity responsible for redistributing funds collected in Senegal’s telecom sector to rural and underserved communities, has been a critical partner in advancing equitable access to care. Under the leadership of then-coordinator Amadou Manel Fall, who praised the efficiency, responsiveness, and patient-centered focus of aloMedic’s services and products, we set out to demonstrate how technology can transform care delivery in even the most remote settings.
Making History: The First Telehealth Encounters in the Zone
During the multi-stop health caravan, we showcased our MLIV telemedicine suite to government officials, local leaders, and healthcare workers. In a first for the region, we conducted live telehealth demonstrations, connecting specialists in Dakar with aloMedic doctors in Ndouloumadji to carry out real-time patient consultations.
For many in the community, it was the first time seeing a doctor, let alone interacting with one through secure, connected technology. Over the course of the caravan, we served approximately 1,500 community members, providing screenings, preventive care, and health education.
Lessons Learned: The Power of Community-Centered Innovation
This event was more than a demonstration of technology; it was a proof of concept for what equitable, decentralized healthcare can look like when technology, government partnership, and community engagement align.
Key Lessons:
- Community Involvement is Essential: Local leaders helped mobilize residents, ensuring families felt comfortable seeking care and engaging with telehealth.
- Technology Must Fit the Environment: MLIV’s low-bandwidth optimization allowed seamless connections despite infrastructure limitations.
- Local Partnerships Build Trust: Collaborating with FDSUT and regional health workers ensured alignment with community priorities and cultural contexts.
- Healthcare Can Be a Source of Hope: Seeing patients meet a doctor for the first time; many with tears of relief and gratitude, reminded us why this work matters.
A Transformative Experience for All
For the AloMedic team of doctors and staff, the caravan was a powerful reminder that innovation must be rooted in people. Engaging with patients, sharing knowledge with local health workers, and witnessing firsthand the excitement around telehealth’s possibilities energized our mission.
For the communities of Bakel and Ndouloumadji, it was the start of a new relationship with healthcare, one that does not require leaving their communities to access quality, specialist-led care.
What’s Next? Scaling Sustainable Impact
The success of this proof of concept confirms that telehealth, when designed for and with communities, can sustainably decentralize healthcare. We look forward to expanding these initiatives, working with partners like FDSUT to bring MLIV and community-centered care to more regions across Senegal and beyond.
We are grateful to the community members, government officials, and health workers who made this possible. Together, we are building a future where healthcare is accessible, connected, and centered on people, no matter where they live.
